“Our backdoor neighbor is 7 feet tall, shaves his head and rolls his muscles in a somewhat threatening manner each time you bump into him at the fence. Whatever you say to him, his response always sounds like a deep bark. And be sure to never ask him a favor. If you’re lucky he won’t throw a brick through your windows for having had the nerve to ask…
All the neighbors consider him a true terror and everyone does their best to ignore him as much as possible. Us too. Us as in me, my partner and our 4 kids. But recently there was an incident involving our 7 foot monster which we couldn’t pretend never to have happened…”
This is the start of a blog post I wrote last April (See: 7 Feet Monster Lurking Behind the Fence). The encounter with our neighbor was very real and quite scary. But before I tell you a little secret of how you can turn any monster into your ally, I want to share with you what I learned from Joe Vitale about storytelling. (Tip: you can print out this page using the print link at the top!)
Storytelling is one of the most valuable techniques you could master since storytelling is a tool which you can use for just about anything you are doing online:
- Creating interesting web content…
- Writing your sales letters…
- Promoting products you endorse…
- Persuading potential JV partners to work with you…
- Articles, emails, ezine ads, and more…
Now I happen to like writing. Always have. I did pretty well in school with creative writing. But I also know that being faced with the task of writing a story is enough to give a lot of people a series of sleepless nights…
Are you one of these people?
Than just imagine how it would feel like if you had this treasure chest next to your desk. And each time you need to write, all you need to do is to close your eyes, slip your hand under the lid of your chest, and grab the right words…
That’s how easy your writing life becomes when you have Joe Vitale’s Hypnotic Swipe Files at hand. They contain lists and lists of words and sentences for every occasion.
Need an opener to draw your readers into your story?
How about…
- Do you remember a moment when…
- By the time you finish reading this, you’ll have forgotten…
- As a result of what I am about to tell you…
- How many times have you asked yourself…
- Imagine being back in a classroom…
These are just 5 potential openers randomly chosen from a list of 800 opening sentences in the swipe files…
How about some mesmerizing copy connectors?
- As you can imagine…
- After all you hear…
- Unfortunately you feel…
- Immediately notice…
- Rarely you sense…
The Swipe files contain 440 of these. And so many more…
- 60 ways to write so your reader becomes relaxed…
- 131 embedded commands and benefits…
- 25 seductive story starters…
- 21 psychic influencers…
- 19 sensory persuaders…
- 12 unforeseen closures…
- 16 penetrating p.s.’s…
- 160 mind opening questions…
- 20 unorthodox suggestions…
- 25 forbidden benefits…
- dozens and dozens of templates to write sales letters, articles, JV proposals, short ads and more…
And each list comes with a clear description of how and when to use these words and sentences. So you are not in the dark. On the contrary! Even just reading through these lists, you will experience how suddenly the light is switched on. And suddenly writing has become a fun and exciting experience!
How about the story content?
Okay, this is something you will have to come up with all by yourself. But how hard is that really? You are a walking and talking database of hundreds and thousands of experiences stored in your memory. Just find the right one and you have your story.
Take for example that 7 foot monster of mine…
Like I said it was really quite a scary experience having to deal with our neighbor. But then I remembered hearing Mark Joyner and Mike Filsaime talking about 7 foot monsters on the internet. And poof - suddenly I had a great story leading into the internet monsters. And so the monster unknowingly became my ally in helping me to a great little article…
A while ago I almost had a heart attack when I walked into the kitchen. One of my 3-year old twins was determined on getting the cookies from the top shelf of our kitchen cupboard. He had pushed a chair to get on the sink. Opened the cupboard door. And still not able to reach the cookies, he used the water boiler as a step-up. It was very wobbly… But he got the cookies and was just stepping down again as I entered the kitchen.
After the adrenaline had left my system, it struck me how taking risks is sometimes the only way to get what you want. I haven’t used this story yet, but if at some point I need to talk about risk-taking, this could very well be the story to open my article.
I suggest that if you are struggling with writer’s block, take a trip down memory lane.
Close your eyes for a moment. Sit back and relax. And remember that cold winter morning when suddenly…
(’Remember that cold winter morning when suddenly…’ also comes from the HSS swipe files. A list of 801 words and phrases to end writer’s block…)
Take out a notepad and start jotting down any memory you have about things you experienced which really left an impression. Bad things with happy endings are great. Moments you had eye-opening realisations. Turning points in your life…
But hey, don’t just stick to your own experiences. Remember what happened in the life of your parents, your partner, your best friend, your kids. Or something you saw on tv or in the movies which made a big impression. Which got you laughing, crying, outraged et cetera.
Create your own swipe file of stories.
And when time has come to use one of them in your marketing, get yourself a copy of Joe Vitale’s Hypnotic Swipe Files and within minutes your story is transformed into a ‘hypnotic selling story’:

Thank you Patricia, this is the most helpful thing I’ve read so far on storytelling!
