Jan Marijnissen is a politician and leader of the SP - until recently a relatively small political party. The SP has always had a group of loyal members and voters but never enough to play a significant role in dictating new laws and rules in the government.

Because you probably don’t know the Dutch political party system, it doesn’t make sense to give you a detailed explanation of how it works. All you need to know is that we have many parties and their significance is expressed through the number of seats they represent in the cabinet.

During the last big elections of November 2006 Jan Marijnissen’s SP almost tripled in size and is now the 3rd leading party in the Netherlands. This was a success previously unheard of…
